There was a moment, a span of time that disappeared. A point when the only sound was harsh breathing and the only sight was black clouds of rage. One second he was standing still, and the next he was across the room. She stepped back flush against the wall. He braced his hands on either side of her head—without a touch, without a word, his gaze enslaving her as effectively as the chains in the dungeon.

The force of his reaction scared him; he could only guess how it affected her. One look at her face told him enough. If he was a better man—the man he used to be—he’d step back, release her, apologize. But he was neither. “I’ll never go back down there. Never. I've killed men for suggesting less.”

Was that his voice? The words sounded far off, as if spoken by another man, from another time.

Her hands rose as if to ward him off, but stopped short of touching him. Her eyes were scared pools of violet, but her voice was calm, as if talking a crazed man off a cliff. She had no idea how true that was. “Jax. Jax, you need to listen to me. You have my word that you won't die down there.”

“Your word means nothing.” It never had. Never love a Royal. Hadn’t his mother taught him that? He could now add, Never trust one, either.

Her gaze lowered, her breath audible even with his blood pounding in his head. He watched her gather her courage and look at him. “I got you out before, I can do it again,” she whispered.

“Liar,” he said. But there was something that told him she was telling the truth. When he’d been shot, the pain of a sonic bullet ripping through his side was nothing compared to how her words affected his heart. His breath stopped, throat closed, and yet, everything in him slowed to one burning question. “W-what are you saying?”

She shook her head as best she could in the limited space he’d allowed. Had he forgotten to back off? She didn’t deserve his mercy. “Nothing,” she said, her voice shaky and unsure as a new soldier in battle.

Did she think this was a game? If so, she’d forgotten that he didn’t play fair. “I've killed so many men I've lost count. Killing you would barely show up on my conscience.”

Her emotions rolled off of her in waves. He could feel them like they were his own. He should—was familiar enough with them. Desperation. Fear. Oh gods, did he know fear. Desperation was the pit he’d lived in. Fear was his promise that he’d never go back.

But maybe in the end she saw something he didn’t, because she looked him straight in the eye and shook her head. “No. You wouldn’t hurt me.”

Her belief that there was still some good left in him rocked his soul. But he couldn’t go on her belief alone. “Not a good time to put me to the test, Princess. I’ll ask you again.
